Bora Aksu autumn/winter 2011 at London Fashion Week

Bora Aksu showed us his dark side for autumn/winter, referring to old movie posters and book covers of Jekyll and Hyde and Sweeny Todd as inspiration, at London Fashion Week. The dual identity of Aksu’s show combined traditional men’s tailoring with the creative free-style he is best known for, based on a balance between differing textures and fabric weights, knitting techniques and embellishment. Three-quarter length tailored jackets in Italian tweed featured exaggerated shoulders,and were dissected at the arm-hole, and detailed with zips. Flattering lapels were cut with a curve which fitted round the decolletage, and revealed black, silk-organza shirts. Aksu added humour with the current favourite accessory, a bow-tie.

Cocktail dresses with flirty skirts had thick, wool blanket-stitched seams. Hand-knits were layered in a cobweb of sections with the appearance of the human body’s muscle network. Trousers and jacket sleeves were made from white plastic bags woven into fabric lengths, giving a futuristic feel, which contrasted with tops made of chunky knitted cashmere panels tied at the back – almost like a bib. The dark and foggy streets of the East End in the eighteenth century provided the theme for the colour palate: smokey greys and blacks, occasionally spiced with green. An impressive front row included the Marks & Spencer “face”, Twiggy, singer Marina Diamandis from Marina and the Diamonds, Girls Aloud’s Nicola Roberts, and Paul Weller’s son, Nat.

Turkish-born, London-based Aksu, who has been showing at London Fashion Week for eight years, also designs a Fairtrade capsule collection for People Tree.

INSCAPE SERIES

My new work from INSCAPE SERIES is featured in herlads OWIF’s debut installation with the exhibition in support of African Passions at Chepstow Gallery, Notting hill. The exhibition runs from 3rd-23rd December and will host a number of events, performances and workshops over the course of the venue.

Is a projection of my everyday life and my inspirations around me captured through my phone. I have been finding myself documenting my visions and experiences throughout my days, capturing beautiful surfaces, textures and shapes, which are my everyday inspiration for my future explorations.

Is it the voice inside me that I can hear for real … or is it a misery I need to heal…

I feel the moment of unexpected but I feel the sadness from my past…

Want to relive the sadness or I want to forget the past at last …

What are my answers … is it all in me or is it the question growing inside me …

Who am I and who I become to be … why not already be and find my reasons in me …

Exhibition – SURREAL

SURREAL …

Is a project, which I have been working on for last 4 years and it represents my vision of the female form. All the images communicate similarities between the shapes and inanimate objects through the unspoken language of the movement where the mystery of unravelled is created.

These black and white images symbolize sensual and anonymous visions, with the play of light and dark highlighting bodies in motion and in repose.

My early inspirations were drawn from young female photographer Francesca Woodman. Like her images, my work is influenced by Surrealism and Symbolism in combination with abstract surfaces and connected with the live sculpture of the body, giving a peaceful revelation of serenity.

First explorations leading towards Surreal Series were drawn from my paintings and drawings and were inspired by shapes and fantasy. This was the starting point and moving element to a progression towards expressions through the film photography.

Following images were created through my desire for available and natural light and that became important aspect throughout the whole project.

My subjects used in these series are women from my surroundings, my friends and women I meet and come across in my everyday life. Their natural beauty and undiscovered shapes are inspiring, which creates mystifying and intimate image without limitations. Identity is always hidden, as I want to keep anonymity to create a space for fantasy.

Surreal Series are photographs of everyday women, when captured through my lens becoming creations of my visions of beauty.
